Do I really want a drone at my event?

Drones are old hat now, easliy available in the shops and yet hardly asked for by our clients. We have three of them in different sizes and often give away the option of drone capture with any outdoor event... however there are issues which is why they are rarely used, despite being free.

Don't get us wrong, drones can be fun and for the right event they will add a grand feel to the scale of things (providing your event is large enough to warrant it of course), but it must be said that it is only for these small percentage of clients that we recommend it and some things still need to be improved before we would push it as a 'must' for anyone.

Here is a list of some of the pitfalls we have experienced over the years whilst offering drone capture:

•  The first is noise:
Even the most deluxe models make an awful sound that certainly cannot be used during any required quieter periods such as a wedding ceremony.

•  Camera weight:
A DSLR with good enough quality and a wide angle lens still comes in at upwards of 1.5 to 2kg and most of the mainstream drones cannot lift this weight.

•  Quality:
Most drones are based around compact cameras or the popular go-pros, unfortunately the quality captured by these usually don't meet the minimum requirements.

•  Vibration:
Even with all the high-tech gprs locking, stability controls and anti-shock settings now available, there is always a certain amount of unwanted vibration or jello effect.

•  Operator:
It is rare that a photo/videographer gets time to set-up for drone aerial capture whilst tying to photo or video an event and ensuring they don't miss anything.

•  Peoples nerves:
We noticed that while some were impressed by our systems and thought they were cool, others were simply nervous and one woman even moved outside the venue.

•  Legal aspect:
We wont bore you with the details, but lets say that it is almost impossible as a company to get legal permission, insurance and public liability to fly in certain places.

There are many more things to take in to acccount and amongst some of these other reasons (such as they are often seen as a tacky option anyway, they can even cause the minister at a wedding to cancel the ceremony and not forgetting that they can decapitate someone in the wrong hands from mechanical failure or just bad weather)... it is therfore needless to say that despite us offering drone capture t our clients for free in most cases, we rarely use them and always favour crane, arms, jibs and dollies to capture alternative angles.

Thank you photo marbella, I have been wondering whether I really want one of these drone thingys at my wedding (my fiancé fancied it), and after reading your page here we have now agreed that its not for us. Plus the money we will save now will pay for our photo album. Many thanks for this useful information.

Thank you for using PhotoMarbella™
